Song of Protest

Tune: Original
Lyrics: Charlie Cane
Composer: Charlie Cane

Well it seems that every day the rich grow richer off our backs,
But they will not give a living wage or pay their income tax.
From Covid to the credit crunch, they profit off each crisis
And give themselves fat bonuses whilst we get rising prices.
There's never money for the workers, never money for the poor,
There's always money for a bailout or another bloody war.
And while we rely on the foodbank queue they fly their rockets to the moon.

So we sing our song of hope and protest
And it's justice that we fight for,
We'll keep singing on till the one per cent notice
That the rest of us won't take it anymore.

Well I worry about the future that we’re leaving for the young,
With rising rents and environmental damage that’s been done.
There’s plenty on this planet for each human to be thriving,
But the few want more and more and leave the many just surviving.
They sold off our social housing and all our utilities,
Put the money in their pockets and left us to feel the squeeze
And when we’re intent on demanding more they invent a phoney culture war.

So we sing, &c.
